Suspect in 1992 slaying of teacher's aide held without bail

Suspect in 1992 slaying of teacher's aide held without bail

A warrant was issued Friday for the arrest of Schara on charges of murder, aggravated rape and kidnapping in connection to Ziegert's death.

For 25 years Lisa Ziegert's family have sought answers and justice in her murder. Her body was found on April 19 in a wooded area.

Masslive.com is reporting that Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni will hold a press conference about the 25-year-old murder at 2 p.m., Monday at the Hampden County Hall of Justice.

Investigators began to look back at persons of interest whose DNA was not on file, he said. The following day, a person close to him gave state police handwritten documents in which Schara admitted to the abduction, rape, and murder of Ziegert, the DA said. Later that day, police tried to find Schara, and learned he had fled to Connecticut, Gulluni says.

He was discharged from the CT medical facility on Monday and is now being held in CT on a fugitive from justice charge, WSHM reports.

Schara is expected to be extradited to MA following his legal proceedings regarding the fugitive from justice charge in CT.

It was not immediately clear why was Schara was in the hospital.

The district attorney said officials "have a sense of why he did it" but did not provide details about a possible motive.

Lisa Ziegert was 24 when she disappeared from her second job at a card store in Agawam in the spring of 1992. The clerk who arrived at work the next morning found the store open, the lights on and Ziegert's vehicle still in the parking lot.

Police made headway in the case after distributing a computer-generated picture a year ago, using DNA found at the scene to estimate what a possible suspect would look like, reports said.

"We are so grateful and - 'happy" is the wrong word, I can't use the word 'happy, ' because in this situation, we're not happy - but we are so grateful for the hard work and determination and faith that all of these investigators had over all these years, ' Dee Ziegert, the victim's mother, said Monday, NBC Connecticut reported.
