US Considers Closing Embassy in Cuba

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the U.S.is considering closing its embassy in Havana.

"It's a very serious issue regarding the harm that certain individuals have suffered", Tillerson said Sunday in a television interview with CBS News. "So, we decided to make this gesture and show the Cuban government and people that they are in our thoughts".

A group of five Republican senators have written to Tillerson, requesting the USA again shutter its Havana embassy, which Barack Obama opened toward the end of his presidency.

When President Trump canceled what he called President Obama's "completely one-sided deal with Cuba" back in June, he announced new travel and business restrictions, but left diplomatic relations intact and the US embassy in Havana open.

At least 21 Americans have suffered what the State Department calls "incidents" that have lead to a variety of symptoms, including hearing loss, concussions, headaches, ear-ringing, and even problems with concentration and common word recall. Some reported vibrations or loud sounds that were only audible in parts of rooms, while others heard nothing but developed symptoms.

Russian Federation denied involvement through its foreign ministry and offered to help Cuban investigations into the attacks.

Unlike the U.S., Canada has had warm relations with Cuba for decades.

The Cuban government even offered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to visit Havana and investigate the case.

It hard to believe that the Cuban government would have resorted to armed propaganda by attacking US embassy staff in Havana. The incidents began a year ago, and the latest was recorded in August, despite United States authorities having complained to Cuban officials in February and having expelled two Cuban diplomats from Washington in May. That a Canadian diplomat was also affected deepened the mystery.

"Cuba's neglect of its duty to protect our diplomats and their families can not go unchallenged", the senators said.

The incidents have raised concerns across Havana's tight-knit diplomatic community, and at least one other country, France, has tested embassy staff for potential sonic-induced injuries.
