U2, Ed Sheeran Cancel St. Louis Concerts After Protests Over Police Acquittal

Protests turned violent for the second night on Saturday in reaction to the acquittal of a white former St. Louis police officer in the fatal shooting of a black man, as a small group of demonstrators refused to disperse, breaking windows and throwing objects at police in riot gear, who eventually moved in and made arrests. The demonstrations are expected to continue on Saturday, September 16. We have also been informed that local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity' said U2's statement.

On Saturday, protesters gathered at a park and then marched through two St Louis shopping malls, chanting "the whole damn system is guilty as hell".

ED Sheeran has become the latest star to pull out of performances in St Louis, Missouri after protests sparked a safety concern for concertgoers.

"The police of St. Louis informed us that she had not the means of providing a natural protection for our audience, as an event of this size would have required", write the band and Live Nation, the organizer of the tour, in a press release.

The concert at the Dome at America's Centre was cancelled because the band said it could not risk its fans' safety.

After Stockley was acquitted on Friday, sporadic violence resulted in almost three-dozen people arrested and 11 police officers injured, including a broken jaw and dislocated shoulder, police said. "As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment".

Stockley testified he felt he was in danger because he saw Smith holding a silver revolver when the suspect backed his auto toward officers and sped away.

Police eventually used tear gas to clear the area, while almost three-dozen people were arrested, police said, mostly for failure to disperse, resisting and interfering. Prosecutors contended the officer planted the weapon.

The case has drawn a lot of attention in St Louis, where racial tensions have been high since the 2014 killing of a black man in the city's suburb of Ferguson by a white police officer.
