Teacher assaulted student after not standing during pledge of Allegiance

A MI teacher is on leave after an 11-year-old boy said he was physically forced out of his chair during the Pledge of Allegiance.

The incidents began Thursday morning during Stone's homeroom class at East.

It was Stone Chaney's first week at East Middle School in Farmington Hills when the September 7 incident occurred, but now his family says he might not be coming back because his rights were violated. On that day, Stone had refused to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. "I pledge to God and family", he said.

Year after year, day after day, students in their morning classrooms have turned to face the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

"I don't feel safe going to that school anymore because I don't know what they're going to do next", Stone said.

The child's father, Brian Chaney, echoed his son's sentiments during an interview with the Farmington Voice.

"We are very disappointed that when we dropped our son off at East Middle School... we thought our son would be in nurturing hands", Chaney told The Farmington Voice. The boy does not believe in pledging to the flag. "I don't make him sit".

In the meantime, Stone hasn't gone back to the school and his family said they are thinking of taking him out of the district.

"The district fully supports the right of each student to participate or not in the daily Pledge", Heitch said. "And they should respect that", and that they are think of moving out of ts school.

His parents demanded action at a school board meeting, now both teachers have been placed on administrative leave.

Chaney said he'd prefer to keep his son, who he said is a 4.0 student, in the Farmington district, because "we've had a wonderful relationship".

Officials for the district said Friday the teacher has been placed on administrative leave while the matter is investigated.

Stone was asked what he would say to those who are critical of people who don't stand during the pledge. "He believes in what he believes in", Chaney said. And after that, if anything like this happens again, the teacher should be fired and never be allowed to teach in any public school ever again.
