Global hunger on the rise for the first time in a decade

The FAO estimated in the report that 20 percent of Africa's population (more than 243 million) was affected by hunger during the same period.

The report also found at the same time an increase in overweight young children, to 41 million.

"While underlining that the failure to reduce world hunger is closely associated with the increase in conflict and violence in several parts of the world, the report attempts to provide a clearer understanding of the nexus between conflict and food security and nutrition, and to demonstrate why efforts at fighting hunger must go hand-in-hand with those to sustain peace".

"The historic 2015 Paris Climate Agreement seeks to limit the rise in global temperatures to well below 2°C, but to make a significant difference to the world's hungry people; governments need to take urgent action to keep these promises".

The report says 155 million children under age five suffer from stunting of their bodies and often their brains, thereby dimming prospects for the rest of their lives.

The United Nations released its first ever report on global hunger and malnutrition on Friday, and the prospects for a world without hunger by 2030 are looking grim.

Anemia among women and adult obesity are also cause for concern.

"The prevalence of malnourished has also increased". Numerous countries where people suffer the most from hunger have been affected by armed conflicts.

Armed conflicts and climate change are key factors being blamed for a rise in worldwide hunger-the first in over a decade, according to a new United Nations report.

Besides, number of stunted children (under 5-yr of age) dropped from 7.7 million in 2006 to 5.5 million now.

Sánchez Cantillo points to three main drivers of world hunger and malnutrition: conflict and violence, weather related events, and economic slowdowns. These trends are a effect not only of conflict and climate change but also of sweeping changes in dietary habits and economic slowdowns.

In fact, the United Nations registered more overweight and obese children in most regions of the world and in all regions for adults.

Over the past decade conflicts have risen dramatically in number and become more complex and intractable in nature, said José Graziano da Silva, FAO Director-General; David Beasley, WFP Executive Director; Gilbert F. Houngbo, IFAD President; Anthony Lake, UNICEF Executive Director, and Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

Starvation struck parts of South Sudan earlier this year, and there is a high risk that it could return there - and develop in other countries affected by conflict: northeast Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen, the agencies said.

"If we want to beat poverty, injustice and hunger we need to tackle climate change".

The report also names the destruction of wheat and barley fields in Iraq, damage to infrastructure in Syria, and the loss of livestock and crops in South Sudan as effects of conflict which are linked to hunger.
