Cuomo promises NY's help for US Virgin Islands

Cuomo, who planned to return to NY on Friday night, said the assistance from NY would not come at the expense of any needs in the state. Cuomo, who says he'll seek a third term, was asked to visit by Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp, a native New Yorker.

The governor warned that the islands face "a long road to rebuild" but stressed that NY would stand with them.

Hurricane Irma hit the U.S. Virgin Islands on September 6th, leaving St. Thomas and St. John heavily damaged after powerful winds at speeds greater than 150 miles per hour.

The governor announced that 100 National Guard troops and 30 State Police members will be dispatched to St. Thomas to help with security on the island. In the immediate aftermath of the storm, Governor Cuomo deployed 130 Airmen from the New York Air National Guard's106th Rescue Wing, three HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopters, and two HC-130 search and rescue aircraft and three Zodiac inflatable rescue boats to assist with initial search and rescue efforts.

More U.S. Virgin Islands residents were born in NY than another state in the nation, Cuomo's office said. NY has already deployed aircraft and personnel to help with search and rescue.

The Democrat visited the Virgin Islands Friday to survey storm damage to better understand how NY can assist in the recovery. Other units have traveled to Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Puerto Rico following hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

The trip likely will fuel speculation about Cuomo's interest in running for president in 2020.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement of resources for the islands after touring hurricane-ravaged areas there on Friday.

Cuomo says NY stands ready to assist the Virgin islands "in any way we can".

"Opioid addiction devastates the lives of afflicted New Yorkers and their families, and it is critical that we continue to fight against this epidemic", Governor Cuomo said.

The Democrat plans to travel to the Caribbean islands Friday and return home in the evening.
