Malaysia school fire kills 23 children and teachers

23 students and two school staff died in the fire.

Sources close to the parallel investigations being carried out by police and Fire and Rescue Department said they were convinced yesterday that the fire was not an accident after reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage obtained nearby.

The blaze began near the door of the dormitory - the only entrance - which along with the window grills, left the students unable to escape, according to fire officials.

The worst fire occurred in 1989 when 27 female students at a private Islamic school in Kedah state died in a blaze that gutted the school and eight wooden hostels.

He said it was not known if such schools were now required to undertake risk assessments to identify aspects like general fire precautions for the safety of occupants, including suitable means of escape.

A victim list released by the authorities showed 22 of the deceased were students while three others were religious teachers, Xinhua news agency reported. "We are investigating the cause of the fire", observed, for its part, the Centre" s director of fire and rescue Kuala Lumpur, Khirudin Drahman.

An official with the state religious council, however, said it has no record of the school.

Amar Singh who is the chief of the Malaysian Police Department says that all the students who have lost their lives are in the age group of 13 to 17 years.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters that it isn't the first such incident, adding that all Islamic religious schools were required to register and follow safety requirements.

He added that if the fire was caused by "mischief" then it would be considered a crime, which falls under the police's jurisdiction. The victims are trapped inside the room when the fire broke out high.

Earlier reports suggested there were 24 victims in total.

According to CNN, Malaysia's minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government said the school's license was being reviewed and it shouldn't have been operating.
