USA is said to test support for extending Iran nuclear limits

USA is said to test support for extending Iran nuclear limits

According to sources, today (Thursday), the United States will announce further sanction relief for Iran as part of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Velayati, a former foreign minister, added that no agreement endorsed by Iran had included permission for inspectors to visit Iranian military sites, adding that Iran would never have signed any agreement including that condition.

Trump has not yet decided whether he will certify Iran's continued compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) next month, U.S. officials said.

Speaking to reporters in Vienna, Amano stressed that that principle "applies to all countries, including Iran".

"The Trump administration is fully committed to addressing the totality of malign activities attributable to the Iran regime and its proxies", a senior administration official, speaking not for attribution, told journalists on the call today.

In selling the JCPOA to the American people and Congress, the Obama White House frequently pointed to the Additional Protocol arrangement as a further defense against Iranian cheating on its obligations.

Under U.S. law, the president must certify to Congress every 90 days whether Iran is adhering to the agreement.

Trump faces a deadline on Thursday when the US must waive sanctions against Iran or let them snap back into place, violating the nuclear agreement and likely destroying it.

Netanyahu on Tuesday said Israel's position is that the nuclear deal must either be revised or canceled altogether. Former President Barack Obama's administration, which negotiated the deal, did so in mid-January and President Donald Trump's administration did so again on May 17. The U.S. Mission to the United Nations responded in a statement that "of course, she and her team discussed the content with the White House" and through the "interagency" process.

As dozens of retired Generals and Admirals wrote in a letter to Trump in July, the administration must "recognize the national security benefits of the nuclear agreement and appropriately weigh the risks to our troops of escalating tensions with Iran". Congress could then issue sanctions that, according to the plan, would force everybody back to the table.

Iran's vice president and head of its nuclear agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, told the German daily Der Spiegel last week that if Trump walks away from the deal, his country will uphold it with the other P5+1 countries. First, they would be hard to implement broadly as the previous sanctions regime that brought Iran to negotiations were built on years of diplomacy with a limited objective, not an indefinite time frame. "It's a sign that the debate is moving from whether to decertify to how to decertify".

"This is precisely a scenario that the hardliners in Iran might love", he said, "that is using the fact that the U.S.is out of step with the rest of the global community to drive a wedge between us and Europe, between us and the Chinese and the Russians on this issue".

China, India and other countries could decide to buy oil despite US warnings and sanctions, and Washington could find itself in a trade war with some of the world's biggest economies, Kahl said.
