Steve Mnuchin Asked To Use Government Plane For His European Honeymoon

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, estimated to be worth $300 million, requested use of a government jet to whisk him and his third wife away to Europe this summer for their honeymoon, several people told ABC News on Wednesday.

Mnuchin justified the request by saying that he needed a military aircraft for security reasons and in case he needed to engage in confidential communications.

The Inspector General is already reviewing Linton and Mnuchin's trip to Kentucky on August 21 after a government watchdog group questioned whether it was planned around viewing the solar eclipse from just outside to path of totality.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, the Treasury Department confirmed that the request was made, and considered, because of Mnuchin's role as a member of the White House National Security Council.

Mnuchin found another platform for secure communication and withdrew his request, according to his office.

"You don't need a giant rule book of government requirements to just say (to) yourself, 'This is common sense, it's wrong, '" Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) could also cause more problems for tax reform, emboldening Democrats while frustrating House Freedom Caucus members who are in the dark and plan to not move forward with a budget resolution until they are filled in on the specifics of tax policy.

"Such trips can cost tens of thousands of dollars to operate per hour", according to the news site.

They added that use of a government jet was ultimately deemed "unnecessary" because other secure means of communication were available.

This is not the first time a trip by the former Goldman Sachs banker has raised eyebrows.

Mnuchin's wife, actress Louise Linton, sparked a public furor after that trip when she chided a woman on Instagram who had accused Linton of flashing her wealth while traveling to a poor part of the country.

The White House says it will soon release legislative priorities for its plans to overhaul the nations tax system and to address hundreds of thousands of young immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. "Adorable! Did you think the USA govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?!" It would balloon if tax rates were cut too deeply without providing offsetting federal spending reductions and closure of tax loopholes, both politically hard tasks.

"At a time of expected deep cuts to the federal budget, the taxpayers have a significant interest in learning the extent to which Secretary Mnuchin has used government planes for travel in lieu of commercial planes, and the justification for that use".
