Weekend Premier League action pits Manchester City against Liverpool

Coutinho was back training for Liverpool yesterdayWhat's the story?

Coutinho returned home via private jet on Wednesday with club-mate Roberto Firmino, Manchester City trio Ederson, Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus and Chelsea's Willian.

Philippe Coutinho has been left out of the Liverpool squad for Saturday's Premier League match at Manchester City, manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The 25-year-old, who tried and failed to manoeuvre a switch to Barcelona this summer, reported for training at Melwood on Thursday after returning from global duty.

Barcelona had several bids rejected by Liverpool for the wantaway midfielder, who had set his heart on a move to Spain but the Reds held firm and kept a hold of the 25-year-old beyond the transfer deadline. With both teams going well in the league I expect a close match at the Etihad with plenty of goal mouth action.

The £215m paid for the likes of Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva means there are no excuses for Guardiola after a trophyless first season in England.

"Do I think that somebody could have [a complaint]?"

"Pre-season, we took care of him and he played all three games".

"I don't think he'll have any problems with the other players, I think footballers are generally understanding of each other and their careers", Gibbons explained.

"We always have the same decision to make: does he need training or can he play and all that stuff".

Klopp told Liverpool's website: "We saw training [on Thursday] morning and thought, "OK, maybe we should use him immediately", because he was really good, but that doesn't make sense. I know him that is not his way".

Opponents don't come much tougher than Liverpool, though, with Jürgen Klopp boasting an extraordinary record against the league's top teams. "We are happy to have him, and we still want to help him in his development".

After joking that he would not answer questions on Coutinho and the transfer window, Klopp said: "We had a very good talk, he was in a very good mood and training was even better". However Raheem Sterling is unavailable for City against his former club due to the red card he picked up after celebrating an injury time victor against Bournemouth last month. We try absolutely everything to help them [the young players] to play with us and he wanted to play in the first team.
