Majka climbs to Stage 14 Vuelta victory

The state has tried without success to décramponner Chris Froome (Sky) on the final climb: supported by the Spanish Alberto Contador (Trek), Nibali accelerated on several occasions, but the British returned to the train.

Lopez, a 23-year-old rider for Astana, claimed his first grand tour win on Wednesday, when he won a similarly tough mountain stage finishing at the Calar Alto summit.

Nibali came third to take the four bonus seconds off Froome, who was just behind the Italian in fourth.

"As soon as the breakaway went the guys went up to the front and they basically controlled the race, nearly from the start to finish, so hats off to them". "I gave it my best shot and it didn't work out so I'll try again another day". "It is great to take the win after our team controlled the race really well all day".

"Today wasn't easy for our team, we had to ride nearly 150kilometres at the front", she continued.

Froome crossed the line six seconds ahead of Nibali, who finished seventh.

Kelderman was third, a further nine seconds adrift, but both he and Zakarin remain over two minutes behind Froome.

While an early break was allowed to escape and Colombia's Miguel Angel Lopez overhauled Britain's Adam Yates to win the stage to rise to sixth in the overall standings, the relentless tempo set by the Sky train meant all attempts by Froome's key rivals to drop the Briton ended in failure.

"Sleep all day", confessed Froome when asked of his plans for the rest day.

Polish rider Rafal Majka took the stage by an impressive margin of 27 seconds, picking up his first win at La Vuelta to go with three stage victories at the Tour de France, where he was King of the Mountains in 2014 and previous year.

"I'm just grateful to be in this position. It's because of them that I'm still in the red jersey".

"I'm not happy because I win, I'm happy for my teammates because today we did a very good job and the team all the time trusted me".
