Chow Yun-Fat spotted clearing uprooted tree from road after Typhoon Hato

Hato, with destructive winds of more than 200 kph (124 mph), was the worst storm since 1968 to hit Macau, causing nearly city-wide blackouts, flooding, disrupting water supplies, smashing scores of vehicles and damaging buildings.

This is the first time the Macau government has sent a request to the Chinese authorities asking for the PLA Macau garrison to assist in relief efforts since Portugal handed the city over to China in 1999.

After causing problems in Hong Kong Island on Wednesday, the maximum category 10 storm Typhoon Hato also caused great problems around Macau and China's Guangdong province.

There were reports of 34 people injured in Hong Kong, which had not been hit by a signal 10 typhoon for five years.

Macau has been rapidly transformed since its return from Portuguese to Chinese rule in 1999 into a gambling hub many times larger than Las Vegas, with major US casinos piling in. "We hope to do something concrete", she said.

The famous casinos of Macao were operating with generators because of power cuts or were closed.

Video footage sent by Macau residents to Reuters showed a man struggling to keep his head above water in an enclosed vehicle park filled with debris, a truck toppling over and pedestrians flung across pavements.

Amidst mounting public outrage at the government's handling of the storm, including the perceived failure to adequately warn residents as the storm approached, Macau's leader, Fernando Chui, apologized and said the head of Macau's weather observatory, Fong Soi-kun, would step down.

"We are quite anxious about Pakhar", Macau resident Ana Chio said.

"I'm not particularly concerned about my area because the situation here is better, but I'm very anxious about residents living in old buildings", Lei said.

WHEN Typhoon Hato slammed into Hong Kong on Wednesday, it uprooted trees and flooded seaside streets.

Streets were lined with trash and shattered glass and residents holding plastic buckets queued for water from fire hydrants.

Casino stocks listed in Hong Kong fell versus a rise in the benchmark Hang Seng Index on Thursday with the full impact on gambling revenues and economic cost still unknown, analysts said.
