SpaceX launches FORMOSAT-5 satellite

The satellite, a successor to Formosat-2, is created to send down high-resolution Earth imagery for five years.

SpaceX previously planned to fly a secondary payload, the Sherpa bus from Seattle-based Spaceflight Industries, which would have deployed almost 90 small satellites after separating from the Falcon 9 upper stage. "Our Air Force team put in a lot of work to support the mission and provide fleet surveillance on behalf of the Space and Missile Systems Center".

The satellite first communicated with a ground station in Svalbard, Norway, 83 minutes after its launch. The camera has half that resolution in color mode.

The ionospheric instrument is an "all-in-one plasma sensor to measure ionospheric plasma concentrations, velocities, and temperatures over a wide range of spatial scales", according to a fact sheet released by NSPO. The historic launch marked the 12th one for SpaceX so far - the most number of launches for the Elon Musk-owned company and the most rockets fired off by any other space company or country in the world thus far.

The Space Exploration Technologiesbooster blasted off at 11:50 a.m.at the beginning of a 42-minute launch windowfrom Space Launch Complex-4 on South Base.
