Flake Responds to Trump's Not-so-Subtle Rebukes in His Home State

Republican Sen. Jeff Flake said during a radio interview Wednesday that President Donald Trump is inviting a primary challenge in 2020 due to the way he's choosing to govern.

Mr. Flake said he does have policy differences with Mr. Trump and concerns about his tone.

But the next morning, the president took to Twitter to name Flake. Then, there are the hints Trump has dropped that he might issue a controversial pardon for the former local Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently convicted of criminal contempt of court for disobeying a federal judge. "I think that is what Arizona's voters expect me to do".

The senator said he would love to show Trump parts of Arizona's border where a wall simply wouldn't work.

Flake has been critical of Trump and his own party in his book "Conscience of a Conservative: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return to Principle". I didn't always agree with George W. Bush.

Robert Graham, a former chair of Arizona's Republican Party, told NPR's Scott Simon last month that Trump has promised to give $10 million to unseat Flake in his primary.

Trump, who has called for a wall along the Mexican border and draconian border security, has characterized Flake as insufficiently harsh on crime and immigration, but the harsh words are more likely political payback.

Ward, a former state lawmaker who gained attention previous year for unsuccessfully challenging McCain, sounded giddy when speaking to the Phoenix talk radio station KFYI after Trump's tweet mentioned her.

Trump informally endorsed Flake's Republican primary opponent, Dr. Kelli Ward, in a tweet last week, calling Flake "toxic!"

Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Arizona Rep. Trent Franks (R) suggested a pardon is imminent.

"I would invite the president to come with me to other areas of the border, like near Douglas, Naco, where you actually have a watershed that flows northward", Flake said. "That is what I have done with every president, Republican or Democrat". Trump was unhappy with the legislation and didn't want it to pass, one person familiar with the call said.
