Facebook looks to New Yorkers for its streaming aspirations

Facebook looks to New Yorkers for its streaming aspirations

The series was created by Humans of NY founder Brandon Stanton and executive produced by Julie Goldman, known for her work on "Life Animated" and "Weiner". I'm often deeply moved by the people I meet. Seven years later, his blog "Humans of New York" has become a social media sensation, spawning a Facebook page with over 18 million likes and an Instagram following of over seven million people.

Photographer Brandon Stanton speaks at BookExpo America, Thursday, May 28, 2015, in NY.

"Early on I realized that video would add a deeper layer to Humans of NY".

The massively popular photo blog Humans of NY is getting a 30-minute episodic TV series on Facebook's recently launched "Facebook Watch" platform. The episodes are slated to come out weekly.

Stanton told THR that Facebook felt like a natural fit for the long in-the-works series - both because its where it all started and because of the platform's global reach. Or they make me laugh.

On Facebook alone, Humans of NY has more than 18 million followers. Or they make me think.

Stanton has a backlog of footage he's been collecting over the past four years or so, which will be rolled into 12 half-hour episodes according to the Hollywood Reporter. The goal of filming the interviews was to create a video series which would further immerse audiences: Stanton says, "I always knew that video would provide the closest thing to 'actually being there'". (With the help of an extremely talented cinematographer named Michael Crommett.) Instead of posting these videos one day at a time, I held onto them so that one day I could combine them into something special.

While Facebook Watch features short-form series from over 30 content partners, Humans of NY is one of the few shows the social media giant is funding itself. My goal was not to make a television show based on Humans of NY.
