30 dead as followers go on a rampage AT LEAST 30 people were killed and more than 250 injured in widespread rioting after enraged followers of self-styed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh went on a rampage to protest his conviction on Friday.

Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been proven guilty by the special CBI court in Panchkula in the Sadhvi Sexual Harassment Case.

An AFP reporter saw police fire tear gas and water cannon into a crowd of protesters who threw stones and attacked two television vans, overturning one. "We request all to maintain peace", the statement further read. Media reports put the number of injured at more than 100.

The Army was staging flag march in the curfew-bound areas of Punjab to restore the confidence of the people, said the CM, adding that the decision to impose curfew in some areas was taken as a preventive step. It was not clear if the injuries were due to police action or violence by Dera followers, which included a large number of women.

Apart from being known as a spiritual leader and philanthropist, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is also known for acting in five Hindi movies and is the pioneer of the MSG: Messenger of God series of films.

An eye-witnesses present in the Court told Sikh24 that Gurmeet Ram Rahim was appearing quite clearly depressed and he looked shaken when the Court delivered it's verdict.

Ahead of the start of the hearing at the special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court in Panchkula, Haryana, thousands of Singh's followers had gathered in the city in the morning, blocking roads and staging demonstrations in support of the guru. His sentence, which is expected to fetch between seven and 10 years, was scheduled to be announced on Monday.

According to media reports, Dera Sacha Sauda supporters have turned violent burning government offices and railway station.

The law & order situation is being closely monitored.

Prior to the reading of the court judgement, authorities ordered Internet and mobile phone services shut down across both Haryana and Punjab as a security precaution.
