Apple to build US$1.3bn data centre in US

Apple did not respond to a question on how many data centers it has in the United States.

The 400,000-square-foot data center will "strengthen the relationships" in Iowa, where 30 Apple suppliers, including 3M and Qorvo, already operate, Cook said.

Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham said, once completed, it will be the largest ever private investment in the state.

Speaking alongside Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said the facility "will create hundreds of jobs for people in Iowa from construction to engineering".

Apple will reportedly be receiving an incentive package from the state in exchange of brining their project to Iowa.

Apple is a boon for Waukee, a farm town about 18 miles west of Des Moines, which is working to keep up with its rising population.

As part of its development agreement, Apple will deposit $500,000 into a public improvement fund every time the company takes out a building permit for its 2,100-acre Project Morgan data farm on land that was recently annexed into the city.

As WOI-TV reports, Waukee, Apple, and state leaders have been working on this deal for more than a year.

"We're here today because across Iowa, businesses, schools, developers and government are coming together to build a new home for innovation in America's heartland", said Cook. Thursday morning, the Waukee City Council voted to provide a 20-year tax abatement for Apple that is estimated to be worth $188,239,943.

At a cost of $1.3 billion, approximately 550 new jobs for construction workers will be created in the process of building.

To do this, Apple plans to work with local partners to invest in renewable energy projects from wind and other sources, which will be used to power the data centre.

Apple expects the data center to be up and running in 2020. "We look forward to a continued partnership with Apple on this effort for decades to come". They'll get wages, they will spend money in Waukee or the area.

State subsidies to technology employers have become a key issue in Midwestern states such as Wisconsin, where Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, is seeking US$3bil (RM12.8bil) in subsidies for a US$10bil (RM42.7bil) LCD panel plant.
