White nationalist Chris Cantwell turns himself in to authorities

White nationalist Chris Cantwell turns himself in to authorities

The council meeting was the first since the "Unite the Right" event, which was believed to be the largest gathering of white nationalists in a decade. City leaders had initially planned to leave it in place. Bellamy says the council discussed what happened August 12 and how the council can ensure they are "moving forward in the right direction".

Signer said the Charlottesville City Council will formally vote to remove the Jackson monument at the next meeting in two weeks.

The City Council voted to cover this statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in the center of the renamed Emancipation Park as well as another monument to Gen. Stonewall Jackson.

The council met privately Thursday morning. Crowds fought violently in the streets, one woman was killed when a vehicle plowed into a group of counter-protesters, and two state troopers died when their helicopter crashed. Eventually, Charlottesville Vice Mayor Wes Bellamy announced that the council would drop its agenda and listen to the crowd's concerns on the event, per the AP. The group cheered even louder when the city council members finally left the room, and the live stream of the event cut off when some yelled "fuck you!" City Council candidate and community activist Nikuyah Walker said. The city says officials will provide an update on "recovery efforts" and offer opportunities for public comment.

Police said in a statement Tuesday that Christopher Cantwell of Keene, New Hampshire, was being sought on three felony charges: two counts of the illegal use of tear gas or other gases and one count of malicious bodily injury with a "caustic substance", explosive or fire.

Contacted Tuesday by The Associated Press, Cantwell acknowledged he had pepper-sprayed a counter demonstrator during an August 11 protest, a day before a deadly demonstration in Charlottesville.

Around mid-day Thursday, the council emerged from the meeting to say both Thomas and City Manager Maurice Jones still have their jobs, according to The Daily Progress.

The city is hosting what it calls a "community recovery town hall" Thursday evening, in collaboration with a division of the Department of Justice. The judge did not set bond, but told Cantwell his attorney could request a bond hearing later. Covering the statues is meant to signal the city's mourning for Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer, who was killed when a auto slammed into a crowd protesting the rally.
