US Warns Citizens About Traveling to Cancun

The state department said, "U.S. citizens have been murdered in carjackings and highway robberies, most frequently at night and on isolated roads".

According to State Department officials, US citizens should be aware that based on Mexican Government statistics, Quintana Roo and Baja California have experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to 2016.

The U.S. Department of State issued an updated travel advisory for citizens traveling to Mexico, expanding a December 8 warning to include the state of Quintana Roo, home to several resorts popular with American tourists.

The travel warning is a major hit to Mexico's $20 billion-a-year tourism industry, of which the regions surrounding Cancun and Los Cabos are crown jewels.

For travelers who insist on visiting Mexico, the US government is warning that its response time to emergencies involving American citizens may be hampered or delayed.

The San Diego Union-Tribune pointed out that there are areas of Mexico with no State Department advisories, including Mexico City along with the states of Hidalgo, Campeche, Tlaxcala, Yucatan, Tabasco, Queretaro, Puebla, and Guanajuato.

US citizens have been murdered in carjackings and highway robberies, most frequently at night and on isolated roads.

The State Department issued the advisory Tuesday, citing an uptick in criminal organizations in those areas. But the department does suggest that citizens traveling to Mexico "defer non-essential travel".

However, the homicide rate in both Baja California Sur and Quintana Roo has risen since this time past year.

Innocent bystanders have been injured in the ongoing public acts of violence between rival criminal organizations, officials said.

As violence encroaches on beach tourist zones, the United States has added Cancun to its latest travel warning (Viaje Jet). Turf battles have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by USA citizens, and shooting incidents have injured or killed innocent bystanders.
