Jay Thomas Dead at 69 After Battling Cancer

Jay Thomas, an actor and radio personality whose work on the television series "Murphy Brown" won him two Emmy Awards in the early 1990s, died on Thursday at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif. He had been battling cancer.

The news comes to the New York Daily News from Thomas's agent Don Buckwald.

The comic was best known for starring as Jerry Gold on "Murphy Brown", from 1989 until 1998. He later landed a recurring role as the hockey-playing husband of Rhea Perlman's character on "Cheers".

For years, Thomas appeared with David Letterman on his late-night talk show during Christmas season and told a great, never-gets-old story centered on Clayton Moore, star of TV's The Lone Ranger.
