White nationalists make plans to rally in Lexington

The leader of a white nationalist group said it is planning an event in Lexington soon to protest the statues relocation.

Lexington Mayor Jim Gray says the violence in Charlottesville sped up his efforts to get the statues moved to the city-owned Veterans Park.

As the Lexington Herald-Leader noted, it cost $400,000 to move Confederate statue off the University of Louisville campus in Louisville, Kentucky.

"The question about whether we encounter some risk in doing this I think is important to examine, but as I said last night at the vigil, we can not let the threat of violence keep us from doing what is right".

The mayor of Lexington, Kentucky, is pushing forward on plans to remove Confederate symbols from government grounds after the devastating attack in Virginia that left one dead and 19 injured in a clash over white nationalism. Jefferson, Washington. We can't erase the history of those men as slave-owners.

Over the weekend Gray proposed moving them to a veterans' walk being developed in Veteran's Park but, apparently after pushback from neighbors, he asked instead for the council to endorse moving the statues with locations to be announced within 30 days. The white supremacist groups that gathered Saturday were drawn at least in part to the city by a vote to sell a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The statues honor two men who served the Confederacy in an effort to preserve slavery and continue those awful auctions. A final vote to petition the state military heritage commission for approval to move the statues could come Thursday evening.

Debate over the monuments in downtown Lexington dates back to the summer of 2015, when vandals painted "Black lives matter" on the statue of Morgan.

"It's the right thing to do", he told the Post.

"But", the vice mayor added, "we will also be able to add additional signage to give the statues the appropriate context and explain how they came to be and what was going on in Lexington at that time".
