Florida Gators suspend Antonio Callaway, six other players for MI opener

Callaway is the only one of the seven players who are projected to be starters for the Gators, though Davis did play a role in Florida's defensive line rotation previous year.

The school has not commented on the reason, although multiple media outlets are reporting the players allegedly misused funds provided to them as part of their scholarships.

Callaway has had trouble with suspensions since he first joined the Gators three seasons ago.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing", coach Jim McElwain said in a press release.

Last August, Callaway admitted during a Title IX hearing at the university that he was high on marijuana during an alleged sexual assault in January 2016.

The other players who will be unavailable are: sophomore defensive lineman Richerd Desir-Jones, freshman linebacker James Houston, freshman linebacker Ventrell Miller, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jordan Smith and freshman offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort. "Action has been taken-they have missed some practice and will miss the MI game". In two seasons, the junior from Miami has 89 catches for 1,399 yards and 11 touchdowns.

For now, the situation hasn't escalated enough to necessitate a longer suspension than just one game. Davis started five games in 2016 and appeared in all 13. Look for teammates Brandon Powell and Tyrie Cleveland to see more action in Callaway's absence.

Of the seven suspended players, Callaway is the lone starter. As perhaps the second-best game on their schedule, a win for MI would greatly improve their chances of earning a playoff bid after barely missing the playoffs last season.
