Judge weighing Unite the Right rally permit injunction

Up to 6,000 people are expected to join the event, according to police estimates.

The mayor of Charlottesville said via Twitter on Saturday that he is "heartbroken" to announce that a "life has been lost". That effectively ended the rally's start, and Emancipation Park remained empty.

One person was killed and 19 others were injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters marching against a "pro-white" rally Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., witnesses and officials said.

White nationalists clashed with counter-protesters before police moved in and dispersed the crowd at a demonstration in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia.

As they did so, they were met by a wall of men dressed in body armour and helmets, some of whom used pepper spray, police said. Riot police at one point struggled to hold back surging demonstrators, news footage showed.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe had earlier declared a state of emergency.

Response teams from Richmond will be in Charlottesville this weekend, and the Virginia National Guard is on standby.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to denounce the violence.

House Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted the views expressed in the city were "repugnant" and "vile bigotry".

City officials proposed that the rally be held at the larger McIntire Park instead, due to safety concerns.

More than 100 white nationalists, neo-Confederates, and alt-right activists marched with Tiki torches through the university's lawn and the Rotunda.

First Lady Melania Trump called for people to "communicate (without) hate in our hearts". "They will reveal themselves to be violent, intolerant, opposed to free speech, the insane enforcers of political correctness, etc.' The organizers of the rally want confrontation; do not gratify their desire". The suit said that the city was unconstitutionally infringing on the demonstrators' First Amendment rights by directing them to go to a different park.

Attorneys for the ACLU Foundation of Virginia and The Rutherford Institute filed the injunction on behalf of Kessler.

The incident capped off a day of violence and chaos that began when white nationalists gathered for a rally, waving confederate flags and chanting Nazi slogans.

One protester was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, while several injuries were reported, UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan said in a statement on Saturday.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who won the Virginia Democratic gubernatorial primary over progressive hopeful Tom Perriello in June, released a statement ahead of the rally condemning white supremacists and asking others not to respond with violence.

"I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the hateful behavior displayed by torch-bearing protesters that marched on our Grounds this evening", she said.

Fears and tensions are running high as thousands of extremists take part in a "Unite the Right" protest against the removal of a statue of a Confederate general. "The violence displayed on Grounds is intolerable and is entirely inconsistent with the University's values".
