John Mayer pays tribute to Glen Campbell on Nashville stage

Campbell cut the album in 2012 after completing a hard final tour, which was documented by the movie Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me.

After a recording hiatus during which Campbell toured heavily, he followed this up in 1975 with another Grammy for the best record Rhinestone Cowboy which contained his signature hit song of the same name, and then another in 1980 for best record by a duo, which was Dream Lover with Tanya Tucker, his much-younger fiancé.

Campbell's more than 70 albums sold more than 50 million copies, earning him six Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Musicians Hall of Fame. He had originally recorded with the group the year before, but when band leader Brian Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown in December 1964, Campbell was hired to take his place on tour, playing bass and singing harmonies.

L.D. Gorman, who is a Hazard businessman was friends with Campbell for about 40 years, ever since he invited Campbell to sing during a free concert in Hazard in 1973. No cause of death was given, but the singer announced in 2011 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

"I'm Not Gonna Miss You", which was recorded with members of Phil Spector's famous Wrecking Crew band, was based on a comment that Campbell mentioned to his co-writer and producer Julian Raymond when people would bring up his disease.

GLEN Campbell has died aged 81.

Campbell, who was married four times and had eight children, had well-publicised struggles with drinking and drugs. He recorded songs for everyone from the Byrds to Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra, but with the Beach Boys, Campbell almost had a full-time gig. CNN has reported that Campbell will be best remembered through his music which runs from the mid-60s and up to the late 80s.

Campbell's death was met with an outpouring of grief from stars of the country music world and others. Campbell used the song as the theme to his television variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour between 1969 and 1972.
