Facebook launches YouTube competitor called Watch

Facebook will also have Show page which will help users to create a Facebook show and publish new episodes. The first slate of programming is expected to include around 40 shows from different publishing partners and content studios.

Live events that bring communities together.

People already watch a lot of videos on Facebook, but mostly when they scroll down their main news feed. "We want any publisher/creator who is interested to be able to create a show in the future", a Facebook spokesperson tells me.

"Watch is comprised of shows, a new type of video on Facebook", said Nick Grudin, Facebook's vice president of media partnerships, in a blog post. Naturally, given that Facebook already knows everything about you and your social network (including things you don't even know about yourself), Watch will have a significant social component to it. Watch will let users sort videos according to various social criteria such as "Most Talked About", "What's Making People Laugh", and "What Friends Are Watching".

The new Facebook feature, called Watch, will make it easier for users to navigate all the video content that has been uploaded to the platform. And it is taking the risk out of the content-creation endeavor for many publishers, either by paying to offset their production costs or offering to license or buy their content outright, people familiar with the arrangements say.

Watchlist feature of the tab will help users to easily follow their favorite shows.

He said some of the content would be made by "professional creators" and others by "regular people in our community". While Facebook Live videos can let agents post jaw-dropping travel footage in real time, once the broadcast is over, that video can be quickly pushed down users' newsfeeds, making it hard to find again.

Facebook's Watch tab will be available on mobile, on desktop and laptop, and its FB TV apps.

However, in the upcoming weeks, the new platform should reportedly become generally available to all residents of the U.S. Group Nine Media, the parent of NowThis News, The Dodo and Thrillist, said it is launching a whopping 24 shows across its various brands.

Aside from that, Watch is also considered a platform for all creators and publishers to find an audience, build a community of passionate fans, and earn money for their work.

"Facebook has been unable to get more than 30% of their audiences to surpass 2-second viewability", said Fielde Garthwaite, co-founder and CEO of the TV analytics platform Iris.TV.

Facebook's benefit is that Watch is cross-platform, allowing people to view videos from all their devices, while also being a daily destination for 1.32 billion users.
