South Africa's Zuma happy after surviving vote

South Africa's Zuma happy after surviving vote

"Either we allow one family, aided and abetted by the President to take everything from us or on behalf of the people of South Africa we take our country back", opposition leader Mmusi Maimane said in an emotional speech that opened the debate on the motion Tuesday.

After nearly two hours of speeches, members of parliament voted in the secret ballot on the floor of the South African Parliament.

The reputation of Mr Zuma, who spent a decade in prison for his anti-apartheid activities and has been popular among some South Africans for his personal warmth and populist policies, has been tarnished by allegations of impropriety.

"This move by the DA exposes what the ANC has always stated, that the motion of no confidence in President Zuma is not about the president, but an attempt at regime change through parliament".

The African National Congress has 249 seats in the 400-seat parliament and the opposition controls 151 seats.

According to reports, Parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbete chose to make the secret ballot after an opposition party moved the case to the Constitutional Court to enable more ANC members of parliament to break party ranks.

"Most votes for a ANC new party leader are made by local branches, where Mr. Zuma appears more popular", said William Jackson of Capital Economics.

It'll be the sixth time the embattled African National Congress (ANC) leader has had to contend with a vote of no confidence.

Constitutional expert Pierre de Vos at the University of Cape Town says the rest of the administration would continue its work for an interim period of up to 30 days until the country's chief justice convenes a special parliament session to elect a new president.

They thought that they could use some technical details in parliament to remove the ANC majority, said Zuma in reference to the pressure by opposition parties to make the vote secret, which was finally approve by Parliament Speaker Baleka Mbete.

The ANC parliamentary party celebrated victory over what it described as an attempted "soft coup". "The people of South Africa also look to parliament for signals of hope", said Mbete, a longtime Zuma ally.

South Africa's rand weakened almost 1.5 percent immediately after the news of Zuma's victory, with markets perceiving his survival as a negative.

"I have faced seven kinds of vote of no confidence". Zuma's party has bailed him out from at least five previous attempts to remove him.

Montalto also predicted Dlamini-Zuma would win the race to replace Zuma but after a "close and very hard fought" election.
