Google fires employee behind gender gap memo

Google fires employee behind gender gap memo

Damore closed the interview saying that while he was broadly in favor of bringing diversity to Google, he wished that that diversity could also include ideological balance.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai faces an all-hands meeting on Thursday afternoon that could come to define his leadership of the Alphabet unit.

Redacted records obtained by the Daily News show an employee filed against Google on Monday and said that it "has interfered with, restrained and coerced its employees" in the exercise of their rights.

The Guardian reported that one female senior manager who recently left the tech company said that men at the same level as her were making "tens of thousands of dollars more than her".

While the engineer's views were broadly and publicly criticized online, they echo the 2005 statements by then-Harvard President Lawrence Summers, who said the reason there are fewer female scientists at top universities is in part due to "innate" gender differences.

It added that Google threatened employees because of "protected" activities.

But Finberg said that testimonies from half of the 60 women he's interviewed so far indicate a clear gender bias that is causing disparities and prejudices harmful to women. Moderate liberals at the company don't believe the memo threatens the rights of women at the company, while moderate conservatives don't think his firing means they can't express themselves, this employee said.

In the controversial 3,000 word memo sent by Damore, the 28-year-old engineer blamed the gender pay gap in the tech industry on biological differences between men and women.

Tech writer Hiawatha Bray says Google made the wrong decision when they fired Damore. Otherwise, Google's workforce is predominately male and white.

In the mobile app Blind, where users must use their work email addresses to verify they are employees at a given company, a survey of Google employees reflected the divisions.

One employee said he disagreed with Mr. Damore's memo, which he called "academic harassment", and supported his firing, noting "people have been fired for a lot less".

Damore has also said he intends to sue Google for false dismissal and for violating his free speech. She said change is hard and "often uncomfortable".
