AIADMK merger imminent after EPS faction challenges Dhinakaran-Sasikala authority

AIADMK merger imminent after EPS faction challenges Dhinakaran-Sasikala authority

In what is being seen as the process of removing the Sasikala clan from the party, the AIADMK (Amma) faction led by Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami declared on Thursday that TTV Dinakaran, the deputy general secretary of the party, is not authorised to make any appointment and his decisions were not binding on the party.

In a jolt to Sasikala, a meeting presided over by Chief Minister K Palaniswami today said the appointment of Dhinakaran as deputy general secretary was against party rules as he openly questioned their authority.

A resolution to this effect was passed after a 90-minute meeting convened by Palaniswami with party office-bearers that included ministers, MPs and MLAs.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK-Amma faction led by CM E Palaniswami met at the party headquarters in Chennai amid speculation of merger talks with the rebel camp of former CM O Panneerselvam. Overtime Natarajan and Jayalalithaa developed a close friendship that remained strong till the chief minister's death.

The OPS camp has demanded for Sasikala's expulsion from the party and has also asked for the chief's position and CM chair for O Panneerselvam. Chief Minister informed that the merger plan has been given by TTV Dhinakaran who is the party's Deputy General Secretary.

The two factions have been fighting for a long time for the party symbol - two leaves - that is being heard by the Election Commission.

Sources said it also means that after the merger, O Panneerselvam will not be the general secretary of the party, but will only lead a committee that would run the party and coordinate with the government.

"We are fully confident about Deepa Jayakumar", stated the Tamil Nadu Minister over the merger of the two AIADMK factions. "But I can tell you that will not happen", a Dinakaran loyalist said. "Therefore, Dinakaran's announcements also invalid". Dhinakaran said the same leaders who were now talking against them were the ones who had campaigned for him in the RK Nagar bypoll which was subsequently cancelled.

Insiders within the state BJP unit claim that he has given an ultimatum to EPS and OPS factions to announce the merger within August 15, and hold a grand rally when Shah will visit the state in the end of the month. But this proposal is not acceptable to OPS who was CM from December 6, 2016 to February 16, 2017 when he was replaced by Palanisami on the orders of Sasikala.
