'A deliberate act': Manhunt underway after auto injures six French soldiers

French security forces launched a manhunt on Wednesday after a vehicle ploughed into anti-terrorism soldiers outside their barracks in the town of Levallois-Perret (see below), injuring six, three more seriously.

Six soldiers were injured when a driver plowed a vehicle into them on Wednesday.

A Paris police spokesman said the vehicle appeared to clearly target the soldiers, but the motive is unclear.

Three of the soldiers involved in the attack were badly injured, according to a government statement.

Patrick Balkany, the mayor of the suburb Levallois-Perret, told French news that a BMW was "pre-positioned" on a small side street, with the driver laying in wait for troops to exit the building.

The incident took place at around 8:00 am (0600 GMT) in the northwestern suburb of Levallois-Perret.

The attack occurred outside a military barracks 200 metres from the town hall in Levallois-Perret, on the northeastern edge of Paris.

Since January 2015, 239 people have been killed in several terrorist attacks throughout the country while armed forces have been targeted by attacks 10 times, according to Agence France-Presse.

Four soldiers have been left with minor injuries, while two are seriously hurt and have been taken to nearby Percy military hospital at Clamart, south west of Paris.

It was driven slowly until it came within 5m of the patrol before accelerating towards them, he said.

"I heard a loud sound, shouts".

The driver's motive was unclear, but officials said he deliberately aimed at the soldiers, and counterterrorism authorities opened an investigation.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed the arrest of the 37-year-old man, who was stopped after a chase on a motorway north of Paris.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo expressed support for the troops on Twitter, writing, "I hope with all my heart that their attacker will be quickly arrested".

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb described the act as "deliberate" and carried out by a "man on his own". Last weekend, a teenager with a knife shouting "Allahu akbar" attempted to force his way into the Eiffel Tower.
