Rory McIlroy confident as he lurks three back

Rory McIlroy confident as he lurks three back

Australian Scott Hend is in contention for the biggest win of his career at the World Golf Championship's Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in OH after a remarkable 63 today. This week and beyond, the consensus is growing that although others will no doubt intrude from time to time on their private party, it is these...

McIlroy, impressive off the tee, said he felt he could have "got a lot more" out of his round. Hopefully that continues and I can keep it up, not just through tomorrow but obviously into next week as well.

However, after finding rough off the ninth tee and coming up short of the green, the four-time major victor hit a clumsy pitch which ran through the green and failed to get up and down to save par.

"I really scrambled nicely, and made a couple of really long putts back-to-back in the middle of the round that put us at three (under) when I felt like I played a one or two-under round", said Spieth, victor of his last two events.

Both Johnson and Pieters were tied with Hend at eight-under entering their final holes of the day, but they came through with clutch putts.

Reigning British Open champion Jordan Spieth and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who split with his long-time caddie this week, are part of a group of six that shot 67s and are two shots back in Akron, Ohio.

Hideki Matsuyama shot 67 and was two shots behind.

After a mixed first nine holes, two-time major victor Johnson made birdies on 16 and 18 to earn his share of the lead going into Sunday's final round. "It's been like that for three days and I've managed to score really well". McIlroy kept pounding away with driver and through three rounds has hit 39 of his 42 drives longer than 300 yards.

But he appeared to tweak his troublesome back, and had two bogeys and a birdie coming in.

A wild drive at the ninth proved costly as the Belgian had to hole a six-footer to limit the damage to a bogey and, after he responded with another birdie at 10, the Ryder Cup star dropped further shots at 13 and 14 before getting back into the outright lead with his seventh birdie of the round at the 16th. "All I want is a chance to be in contention on Sunday afternoon and we'll see what happens". "I just didn't make as many as I wanted to".

Walker, who will defend his US PGA title at Quail Hollow next week, was six over par for the front nine before birdies on the 15th and 16th salvaged a 74 to leave him six off the pace on three under.
