Venkaiah Naidu, former BJP chief, elected India's vice president

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NDA's vice presidential candidate Venkaiah Naidu and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is yet to give up his Lok Sabha membership, were among the first to cast their ballot.

Naidu secured 516 votes while Gandhi got 244 votes. Of 771 votes polled, 760 were considered valid, and 381 were needed to win. The elections saw the highest polling percentage at 98.12%, with 14 MPs failing to turn up to vote.

In a series of tweets Prime Minister Modi congratulated designated Naidu and wished him luck for a "fruitful and motivating tenure".

The voting began at 10 am Saturday and will go on till 5 pm in the evening.

A two-term member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Naidu has always been known for his commendable orating skills.

While his victory was nearly assured, Naidu's elevation as the Vice-President and ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, comes amid changing dynamics for the BJP in the Upper House. "I can not stay away from people by taking up any ceremonial position", He had declared he would neither want to become the rashtrapati (president) nor uparashtrapati (vice president) but was happy being Usha's pati (his spouse).

Naidu will be the second BJP leader to become Vice President after Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (2002-2007). Though, BJP has become the largest party in both the houses, NDA is still in minority in Rajya Sabha. Cricketing legend and Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar casts his vote.

Serving various organisational posts in the party, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka in 1998.

Venkaiah Naidu was born on July 1, 1949, in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district. But the miscalculations made the task even easier for the ruling party and now, with its leaders getting planted in top posts, the BJP has the launching pad to extend its influence over the country's future for a considerable period ahead. Apart from being the deputy to President Ram Nath Kovind, Naidu will also be the Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

He was however elected to the Rajya Sabha three times from Karnataka and now represents Rajasthan in the Upper House of Parliament.

As the Rural Development Minister in the Vajpayee government, Naidu pushed several reforms, including the "Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana". But the JD (U) which had since come out of the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar and joined hands with the BJP, whether its MPs threw their weight behind Naidu was one of the speculations.
