Northwestern Professor, Oxford Clerk Arrested In Stabbing Murder

Professor Wyndham Lathem surrendered at a federal courthouse in Oakland at about 7:30 p.m Pacific Time and the University of Oxford employee Andrew Warren turned himself in to the San Francisco Police Department at around 6:30 p.m.

"Both individuals will be held accountable for their actions, and we hope today's arrest brings some small level of closure and justice for the victim's family", Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Lathem is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

"He knew that", Conroy said of Lathem.

"Police said they suspect Lathem fled with Warren".

"He (Lathem) probably realized it's never going to end until he's in custody, so let me do it on my on terms".

Warren had recently arrived in the U.S. for the first time but it is not yet clear whether he had known the victim beforehand.

Lathem was booked into the Alameda County jail.

Warren is a senior treasury assistant at Somerville College and says on Facebook that he lives in Swindon, Wiltshire.

The men will appear in court in Oakland before being returned to Chicago where they will be interrogated by detectives, the spokesman added. It was not immediately clear when that would happen.

The pair had been named as suspects in the attack that was so brutal the blade of the knife used in the murder had broken off, police said.

He sent family and friends a video in which he apologised, police said.

Warren had arrived in the United States three days before the death of Cornell-Duranleau and was seen in surveillance video leaving the building with Lathem the day of the stabbing.

Authorities haven't disclosed a possible motive for the killing.

In a freaky twist, police said that on the day of the slaying, but before the body had been discovered, Lathem and Warren drove about 80 miles (128 kilometers) northwest to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where one of them made a $1,000 cash donation to the public library there in Cornell-Duranleau's name.

Guglielmi told ABC News Friday the two suspects donated $1,000 in the victim's name to the public library in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

They were alerted to the murder by an employee at the front desk, who received an anonymous tip about a crime committed in Lathem's residence in the upscale River North neighborhood. He had been dead for 12-15 hours.
