Trump just won't stop talking about Russian Federation

Buried in a long story on CNN Thursday recapping the current state of play in the Russian Federation investigation was a reminder that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who is largely out of the spotlight at the moment, may not be for long.

Who called for a grand jury?

NPR's Ari Shapiro, co-host of All Things Considered, talked to Wall Street Journal reporter Del Quentin Wilber, who was one of the journalists working on the paper's story that Mueller is using a grand jury in Washington, D.C., to investigate Russia's interference.

In May Robert Mueller, a former director of the FBI, was assigned to the investigation. In the United States, they are normally made up of about 16 to 23 members of the public rather than the usual 12, hence "grand" jury.

"Impaneling a new grand jury in D.C. suggests that Mueller has a probe that goes beyond Flynn's conduct, and that could go on for many months", said John Wood, a former us attorney and former chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security.

Grand jury deliberations are secret, with juries impaneled to consider whether there is evidence to indict someone of a crime.

Furthermore, the fact that Trump appears to have committed obstruction of justice, firing the director of the FBI for investigating Russia and counseling his son to lie about his meeting with a Russian lawyer, would put him and his inner circle in legal jeopardy regardless of whether his involvement with Russia was illegal.

Federal investigators exploring whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian spies have seized on Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia as one of the most fertile avenues for moving their probe forward, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The President offered a political argument - not a legal one - for why the Russian Federation story was "a total fabrication" on a day of dizzying revelations about the probe, that heaped fresh pressure on his beleaguered White House.

The president also said Democrats lost because they didn't have enough votes, not because of any Russian meddling. Media coverage of an investigation tends to rely on the people most at liberty to discuss it. The obligation of secrecy applies to the grand jurors and government personnel who examine witnesses and collect evidence through subpoenas.

US President Trump has poured refuted on any suggestion his team colluded with the Kremlin to beat Hillary Clinton.

"This is a serious development in the Mueller investigation", said Paul Callan, a former prosecutor.

Trump's comments, which were meant to denigrate and perhaps thwart the Mueller probe, were undermined by the fact that the grand jury has been at work for several weeks in the District of Columbia. Reacting to some reports that Trump may fire Mueller, two bipartisan groups of senators introduced bills Thursday to make it harder for the President to do so.

Why are grand juries feared? "The White House is committed to fully cooperating with Mr. Mueller", Cobb said.

"When someone gets a subpoena to testify, that can drive home the seriousness of the investigation", said David Sklansky, a professor at Stanford Law School and a former federal prosecutor. "I just hope that if the police ever do arrest him they protect his head when they put him in the vehicle. Last night I believe he called it a fabrication".
