UCF football player loses scholarship for posting videos on YouTube

Kicker Donald De La Haye has been deemed ineligible as an NCAA player because of the money he has made off some of his YouTube videos.

UCF kicker Donald De La Haye was given a choice: stop monetizing his YouTube channel, or continue earning money but stop referencing his status as a student athlete. De La Haye is off the team for not accepting the terms of an NCAA waiver relating to his YouTube videos. "The waiver also allowed him to create videos that referenced his status as a student-athlete or depict his football skill or ability if they were posted to a non-monetized account". The decision came after De La Haye refused to agree to an NCAA waiver that dictated the types of videos he could create and post to his monetized YouTube channel under the name "Deestroying".

UCF ruled De La Haye ineligible, not the NCAA.

His video entitled "Quit College Sports or Quit YouTube?" had more than 178,000 views as of Monday afternoon.

"They proposed to me some rules and some conditions they wanted me to follow and I refused to, because I didn't feel like they were fair", said De La Haye.

College football still has its purity, or something.

"All I wanted was to keep inspiring and motivating others through my content".

De La Haye took a stand for a cause he had no chance of winning.

"Contrary to misperceptions, making a YouTube video - and even making money off of it - is not a violation of an NCAA rule". "It was just very unfair in my opinion", he said regarding the NCAA's decision, "and now I gotta deal with the consequences".

He added: "They wanted me to give my money up that I made, which is insane". In his June video decrying the NCAA's attempt to play executive producer, De La Haye said he felt as though the group was unnecessarily "making me pick between my passion and what I love to do", pointing to the fact that his revenue stream was completely legal. I was just having innocent fun. UCF said in a statement that it had sent the waiver to the NCAA on his behalf, and they agreed he could continue to make the videos, with conditions, mainly not selling ads to videos about his athletic endeavors.

De La Haye could sue the NCAA in an effort to restore his eligibility, according to the Sentinel. Players aren't allowed to make money off their likeness, despite the NCAA being allowed to rake in hundreds of millions of dollars each year thanks to its athletes.
