Protesters Demand Justice in Killing of Kenyan Election Official

Wafula Chebukati, the electoral commission chairman, said he was crucial to the running of the vote scheduled for 8 August.

In an earlier statement, Chebukati said Msando was last seen on Friday night and sent a text message to a colleague early on Saturday morning suggesting "that he was conscious and fully aware of his itinerary for that day".

He also warned Msando's death "could damage voters' confidence on the commission unless the IEBC leadership comes out strongly to reassure the people".

Kenyan elections have turned violent in the past, notably after the 2007 presidential vote that global observers said was flawed.

Chebukati asked the government to provide security for all IEBC employees so Kenyans can have a free and fair election.

"Careless speculation in this time of grief only makes the work of investigators harder, and it only adds to the pain of those who loved him", the president said, urging the country to remain united ahead of the vote.

Some analysts question the impact of economic factors, stressing that most Kenyans still vote along ethnic lines.

The body of senior Kenyan election official Christopher Chege Msando was discovered this week on the outskirts of Nairobi, showing signs of torture, according to police.

In 2013, electronic voting machines suffered widespread malfunctions, and Odinga took his complaints to court, only to have them dismissed. We welcome the government of Kenya's commitment to investigating the murder.

A nationwide poll released Tuesday by Infotrak said support for main opposition leader Raila Odinga, whose popularity has been growing in recent weeks, was at 49 percent while Kenyatta was at 48 percent.

Police say a lone assailant killed one officer, wounded another, then held off security forces for almost 24 hours before being killed.

Kenyatta has repeatedly denied accusations leveled by the opposition that he wants to use force to rig the elections.

Odinga's opposition alliance NASA condemned the "heinous murder" of Msando, saying in a statement they were "gravely concerned" about its implications.

Rashid Abdi, regional analyst at global crisis group, also expressed fear that public confidence in the vote could be affected.
