World's Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge Opens Across the Swiss Alps

- Screen capture via Reuters videoBERN, Aug 1 - The longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world opened in Switzerland on Saturday.

But if the narrowness of the bridge or its length didn't make you fearful, the height may, since it is suspended as much as 278 feet above the Granbengufer ravine near the town of Zermatt in southern Switzerland.

Switzerland also has "Peak Walk by Tissot", the world's first pedestrian suspension bridge in Bernese Oberland. The total travel time across the new bridge, officials say, is less than 10 minutes, if you want to courageous the potential for vertigo.

The bridge - 84.7m high at its highest point - is situated on the Europaweg trail that connects the villages of Zermatt and Graechen.

The trail is considered by many one of the most handsome two-day hikes in the Alps.

"The thrill of traversing the precipice is indescribable", Zermatt Tourism said in a news release, adding that the the bridge was "for hikers with no fear of heights". The completed Europabruecke cuts travel time through the valley from three to four hours to just 10 minutes.

The original bridge was closed in 2010 due to unstable terrain, forcing hikers to detour into the valley before climbing back up to reach the trail.
