Priebus Allies: White House Chaos 'Unsustainable,' Trump 'Demeaned' Him

The tenure of Reince Priebus as White House chief of staff has ended after six months. While Trump briefly stood in the pouring rain to say a few nice words about Priebus after breaking the news via Twitter, behind the scenes, POTUS thought his now-former CoS was kind of a chump for letting Anthony Scaramucci shit all over him in an interview with The New Yorker without bothering to defend himself.

One outside Trump adviser said that the president is drawn to the discipline that Kelly and his other advisers who are former military officers bring to their roles.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff", Trump told his more than 34.8 million followers on twitter soon after his return from NY.

Describing what he called a war on news leaks from senior White House officials, Scaramucci on July 27 cited Priebus in connection with leaks of news stories damaging the president and his aides.

Priebus said he had offered his resignation on Thursday and the president accepted.

Trump's announcement that he had replaced Priebus with Kelly came just moments after news broke that Scaramucci's wife, Deidre, has filed for divorce, allegedly due to his "naked political ambition", according to the New York Post.

Priebus' ally from the RNC, Press Secretary Sean Spicer, resigned after Scaramucci was hired.

Was there really any doubt who Donald Trump was going to side with in the Priebus-Scaramucci feud?

All but seven chiefs of staff have lasted at least one year in the job.

Elaine Duke, the deputy secretary of Homeland security will become the acting head of the department.

Priebus did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Priebus, who hails from Wisconsin and has deep ties House Speaker Paul Ryan, had grown increasingly isolated in the White House, as past Republican National Committee colleagues and other allies have left or been pushed out of the West Wing. "I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God's blessings and great success", he said.

The former Republican National Committee chairman faced a hard task from the outset as he attempted to wrangle a hodgepodge of rival staff factions divided by ideology and allegiance, his influence supplanted by several other top advisers - including the President's own kin - who reported directly to Trump and not to the chief of staff.

Scaramucci was appointed the new White House Communication Director on July 21.

If loyalty is indeed what Trump wants, he gets it in Kelly. His departure comes after Trump lost a major legislative battle early Friday when the Senate failed to pass legislation repealing Obamacare. After news of Priebus' exit, Ryan said his friend "has left it all out on the field, for our party and our country".

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC, a frequent Trump critic, welcomed Kelly as "one of the strongest and most natural leaders I've ever known".

Since the position was first created in 1946, the average tenure of the 29 chiefs of staff stretches almost two and a half years, according to a CNN analysis of data from a Discovery Channel project called The Presidents' Gatekeepers.
