Ralf Rangnick attempts to explain 'village' comment about Liverpool target Naby Keita

Ralf Rangnick attempts to explain 'village' comment about Liverpool target Naby Keita

The same report claims that Liverpool have already had two bids for the midfielder rejected by the Bundesliga side as the Reds look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season.

With Liverpool this week taking the unusual step of publicly ending their interest in Keita, Hasenhuttl was quick to make it clear the Bundesliga outfit are determined to hang onto their prize asset at all costs.

However, developments over the past 24 hours appear to have changed things following Leipzig's sporting director Ralf Rangnick's controversial comments which saw him claim that a whole village in Guinea was demanding Keita joins Liverpool. Similar to the Reds, Leipzig will be competing in the Champions League next season and it will be the flawless opportunity to see whether Keita can continue to deliver the goods in one of the hardest club competitions in the world.

"I know Naby from the very first day when he came to Salzburg", he said.

The 22-year-old has become a hot property since scoring eight goals in 31 appearances last season to help Leipzig qualify for the Champions League.

"RB Leipzig is looking forward to the next season together with Naby Keita".

"You can see how important Naby is for our game".

"We are a very young players and I think for them it is very important to play the first year in the Champions League as a team".

The only way a transfer could still happen prior to the end of August would be if Leipzig performed a U-turn and decided they do not wish to keep an unhappy player. Past year in the summer it was not so easy to get all the new good players.

There has been speculation a clause in Keita's contract would allow him to leave for a set fee next summer, but the Australian, who admitted he expects plenty of interest surrounding the player in a year's time, refused to confirm if such a term exists.
