Dismissed Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif to approach court - Lawyer

Nawaz Sharif presided over a meeting in Islamabad of his PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)) party to review the situation arising out of his disqualification as the prime minister and nominate a new leader, official sources said.

Nawaz Sharif on Friday resigned as Pakistan Prime Minister after the Supreme Court disqualified him from holding public office and ruled that graft cases be filed against the beleaguered leader and his children over the Panama Papers scandal.

The Supreme Court's decision to dismiss the thrice-elected Sharif followed a petition by the country's opposition, which had levelled corruption allegations against the prime minister and his family members.

But Shehbaz, 65, can not immediately replace his brother as he is not a member of parliament.

Sharif was the country's 20th Prime Minister.

An investigative panel said in its 254-page report that Mr Sharif's family assets do not match the family's earnings.

The verdict truncated Sharif's third stint in power. "The nation has not accepted this decision", he said.

Soon after the SC judgement, the PM House issued a terse statement saying that Nawaz Sharif, despite having reservations on the SC's verdict, has stepped down from his post as the premier.

Other prime ministers have been ousted through votes of no-confidence in parliament, the dissolution of the assemblies by the military or in direct military coups.

Sources claim that PML-N leaders and former federal ministers Rana Tanveer, Khurram Dastgir and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi were front-runners for interim post. ALSO READ: Nawaz Sharif Disqualified Forever?

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan said on Saturday that it is shameful that Nawaz Sharif is now playing the victim card despite several references against him sent to the National Accountability Bureau. She was defeated by Sharif in the 2013 general election. Shehbaz Sharif was also Punjab's chief minister at the time and was jailed along with his brother and joined him when exiled in Saudi Arabia.

The bench had begun its hearing in the corruption case against Sharif on July 17. But practically, there is no Prime Minister now and this is not at all possible until the ruling party finds a replacement.

It is the second time in Pakistan's 70-year history that the Supreme Court has disqualified a sitting prime minister.
