Charlie Gard's Parents Return to Court For Life Support Hearing

Connie Yates, left, is asked the High Court to rule that she and Chris Gard should be allowed to take their son home from Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The 11-month-old baby suffers from an extremely rare genetic condition causing progressive brain damage and muscle weakness, and his parents' long struggle to save him has drawn an worldwide outpouring of sympathy.

Sadly, the proceedings dragged on for so long that the parents ultimately admitted on Monday that it was too late for even the experimental treatment to help their son.

Ms Gollop said: "The care plan must be safe, it must spare Charlie all pain, it must protect his dignity, at the same time it must honour his parents' wishes about the time and place of his passing, and it has to balance Charlies interests and his parents' needs".

President Donald Trump even weighed in, taking to Twitter to write on July 3: "If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the United Kingdom and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so".

Charlie can breathe only through a ventilator and has been at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London since October 11 previous year.

Mr Armstrong said representatives for GOSH had not visited the family home.

"It must be provided in a specialist setting by specialists".

The child's life support is expected to be pulled in the next few days. Charlie's parents have chose to stop fighting.

Among other practical problems, it said, the ventilator would not fit through the front door of Charlie's home.

"Emotions are as high in this case as they could be in any", said the judge presiding over the case, Nicholas Francis. Both parents fought bitterly after a court ruling said the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where Charlie was being treated, should be allowed to remove his life support and didn't have to release him to get experimental treatment in the U.S.

"If this prestigious hospital had listened to the parents, had heard and honored the parents, then we would not have been in the situation we were today", said Mahoney. Doctors at Great Ormond Street opposed that, saying it would not help and could cause Charlie more suffering. "There's one simple reason for Charlie's muscular deterioration [and] that was time", noting the lengthy decisions from the courts of London which restricted Charlie from the USA treatment.

A previously scheduled hearing on Monday was said to review "fresh evidence" from the Yates family in a series of long court battles and public attention over the court case.

English courts and the European Court of Human Rights agreed with the healing center.

"If the (experimental) treatment had been tried in time, there would have been some possibility of having an impact on this disease", Enrico Bertini told journalists.
